Folk calendar
Ephraim is a cricket protector.
The church on this day honors Ephraim the Syrian, one of the teachers of the 4th century church, a Christian theologian and poet. The first place among Ephraim's works is occupied by his interpretations of Holy Scripture.
Ephraim had many nicknames in Rus': wind blower, baker, joker, cricket protector. Accordingly, there were many traditions associated with his day. For example, on Ephraim it was forbidden to kill the insects that lived in the hut.
According to one belief, on this day it was necessary to sweep the floor in the house with a broom made of wormwood, which could protect the house from both evil spirits and evil people.
But the most important event of this day is the name day of the brownie. To appease him, they left porridge in the kitchen overnight. The brownie was considered by the people not so much kind as fair; he did not like quarrels, grumpy people and bad masters. But kind, diligent people could always count on his help.
It is known that every peasant family kept a cat – but, interestingly, not only for hunting mice. They said that the cat is the mistress of the house, and she can get along with the brownie.
On Ephraim, the whole evening at gatherings was devoted to stories about the brownie, his habits and tricks. They told stories, sang ditties and jokes.
The signs of this day were used to judge the summer: the wind on Ephraim foreshadowed rain and dampness.
