AI begins to have what is important in interpersonal communication. Just two years ago, GPT chat only answered questions, today he asks them – assessed prof. Jacek Pyżalski from the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań. In his opinion, for this reason, young people choose AI for confession.

Prof. Pyżalski, who runs, among others Studies on digital competences, he appeared in an expert debate during the 19th International Conference “Security of children and youth on the Internet” organized by the Foundation We give children strength and NASK – the State Research Institute.

Answering the question about whether he sees certain patterns in the relationships of young people with artificial intelligence, he said that for many users it is a “hyperpersonal” relationship – better than that that you can have with another person.

– Because a man is capricious, a colleague may be tired, he may have his own affairs, he may not want to talk today. And this device communicating, there are no such problems – explained Pyżalski.

He added that his research shows that language models have a real impact on interpersonal relationships: people turn to AI when they argue with their friend or come into conflict with a colleague from work – and receive advice that affects changes in their relationships with other people.

He emphasized that AI “begins to have what is important in interpersonal communication”: he remembers about the user (just as people remember about other people – we know what they like and what hurts them) and is proactive in conversation.

– Two years ago, GPT time only answered. And now he is asking us about various things. He asks us about various things, but also strengthens us emotionally. You ask the question and he says: “A great question, how did you come up with it?” And we are happy. (…) For all this, the affect begins. (…) What a voice I say, what volume of voice, slowly, quickly, quiet, loudly, my voice breaks down, I speak in one string, I speak not in one string how often I take breaths and so on – the expert pointed out.

He explained that the ability to read emotions causes that although at the philosophical level the relationship with artificial intelligence is not a personal relationship, at the level of user experiences – yes.

According to prof. Pyżalski can lead to a situation in which a person will be difficult to compete with AI, and sometimes he will even be in a losing position: due to the lack of full availability or strength to solve other people's problems.

He pointed out that for this reason some young people – especially those who burned in interpersonal relationships – choose to talk about difficult AI topics.
