A portrait long considered a copy of an Albrecht Dürer creation, kept at the National Gallery in London, has been confirmed as authentic by historian Christof Metzger.
“Portrait of Dürer's Father at 70″, as it is titled, is dated 1497. The painting is considered a copy because of the “unusual technique” in which it was created. Metzger makes his case in a new book that explores the work of the German Renaissance painter in depth.
Albrecht Dürer's portrait of his father has been in the collection of the National Gallery in London for over a century. “Simply put: it is of exceptional artistic and technical quality and shows no sign of being a copy,” Christof Metzger, chief curator of the Albertina Vienna and lead author of “Albrecht Dürer. The Complete Paintings. Selected Drawings and Prints,” told artnews.com.
