The Local Police imposed 41 fines, totaling approximately 100,000 lei, to those who did not clear the sidewalks of ice or snow in Bucharest.

The representatives of the institution emphasize that they will continue to monitor the situation.

“It's been 24 hours since the snow stopped, it's freezing outside, and the sidewalks are turning into an icy sheen, states the General Directorate of Local Police of the Municipality of Bucharest in a post on Facebook.

“In total, for sidewalks full of uncleaned snow or ice, the local policemen of the Municipality of Bucharest issued 41 sanctions in the total amount of about 100,000 lei. Compliance with the rules is not only a legal obligation, but also a gesture of civic responsibility. Those who do not understand this, bear the consequences”, the law enforcement officers said.

The checks mainly targeted the central area of Bucharest, including main arteries and areas such as Bd. Carol, Calea Victoriei, boulevards Lascăr Catargiu and Magheru, Piața Amzei, streets Arthur Verona, George Enescu, Episcopiei, Centrul Historic and Bd. Regina Elisabeta.

“The good news is that most of those we talked to throughout the day yesterday understood our approach. And where we found traders who started shoveling on the spot, the penalty was smaller. Unfortunately, although we put them in mind of what they had to do, we also met companies where no action was taken. The fine was proportionate. Last but not least, for cases where, on the spot, we could not get in touch with any representative, we initiate steps and we will continue to enforce the law,” the post also states.

During Monday, approximately 300 individuals and legal entities were summoned to clear the snow from the sidewalks.

The local authority reminded that the penalties for those who do not comply are 200-500 lei for individuals and 500-2,000 lei for legal entities.
