Folk calendar

Fedoseev day

In the Christian tradition, on this day the last emperor of Rome, Theodosius the Great, is revered, who at the end of the 5th century legally prohibited pagan cults. In the Orthodox naming book, the name Theodosius, or Theodosius, correlates with several early Christian saints – the Venerable Theodosius of Kinoviarch and Theodosius of Atiochi, the martyr Theodosius of Sirmir.

In Rus', this day was often very cold, which served as the basis for such a belief. They said that the evil spirit, which was driven out of houses during Christmas time, has nowhere to go and nothing to do – that’s why it conjures frosts. People expected trouble from these frosts: “The frost is bad, it’s preparing cold”; “The man is beyond the threshold, but the frost is across him.”

Some signs were also associated with frost. It was believed that frost on this day meant prolonged cold, while warmth, on the contrary, promised early spring. This is also stated in the sayings: “Fedoseev frosts – you will sow spring crops late”; “Fedoseevo is warm – like early spring.” At the same time, an excessively warm day also did not bode well: “Fear the January spring – a thin winter is tenacious”; “The warm days of January are not good.”
