T2, a Russian mobile operator, maintained uninterrupted network operation in Kamchatka during the January snowfall – the heaviest in 30 years. Despite the difficult climatic conditions, the T2 team also continued to develop its own infrastructure in the region. In January, the operator installed several new base stations, significantly expanding coverage in Yelizovo, the second largest city in the Kamchatka Territory.
During a series of powerful cyclones in the region, flights were canceled, highways were blocked, and the height of snowdrifts exceeded human height. The T2 team in the Kamchatka Territory was helped to ensure the planned operation of base stations by round-the-clock network monitoring and an increase in the number of duty teams.
Non-standard ones were added to the usual work responsibilities: clearing equipment from snow and ice, maintaining accessible access roads to base stations. T2 strengthened security measures: teams went on field trips in at least two cars to help each other in unforeseen situations.
Since the beginning of the year, the operator has launched several new base stations in Yelizovo, which has expanded coverage and improved the quality of the network for residents. Another base station appeared in the village of Svetly, Elizovsky district: T2 launched an LTE network in the area of the new regional hospital and thereby provided coverage for the largest multidisciplinary medical institution in Kamchatka.
“Active infrastructure development is one of our key tasks, but not the only one. It is equally important to ensure that the network operates without failures in all situations. This is a real challenge, which our specialists cope with very well. All operator cell towers have backup power supplies that keep base stations operating even during a power outage. Maintenance of base stations is carried out regularly even in difficult weather conditions, but with mandatory observance of safety precautions. No matter how the disaster plays out, our main task remains the same – to provide high-quality communications to all our subscribers,” said Alexey Dmitriev, Deputy General Director for Technical Infrastructure at T2.
