Folk calendar
Zakhar Serpovidets
The national holiday got its name in honor of St. Zechariah.
The saints call Zechariah the Sickle Seer because in one of his prophetic revelations he saw a scroll flying through the air and resembling a huge sickle in shape.
Therefore, on the day of remembrance of the saint, peasants paid a lot of attention to this instrument. The reaper women prayed to Zechariah for a good harvest. On the day of his memory, sickles were taken out of the closets, examined, cleaned, sharpened and sprinkled with baptismal water. In this regard, they said: “You don’t sharpen sickles when you go to the stubble”; “If you don’t cut a crooked sickle in time, you won’t harvest a sheaf in the field.”
It was believed that Zechariah the Sickleseer would see the efforts of people and help them – he would breathe spore-like power into the sickles.
According to popular belief, Zechariah was wearing a particularly sharp crescent moon. People noticed: the colder it is on this day, the warmer it will be in March.
