Looking to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit, League Cup holders Newcastle United travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night to face Manchester City in an exciting second-leg semi-final clash.
Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki at St James' Park three weeks ago give the Citizens a 2-goal lead to qualify for the final of the competition. However, Pep Guardiola's men come with questions to answer after their frustrating draw at Tottenham at the weekend, where they surrendered a two-goal half-time lead in a 2-2 draw.
For the defending champion, Newcastle, the mission is a difficult one. They must become only the second team in the history of the competition to come back from a two-goal first-leg deficit to reach the final (this feat was only achieved by Aston Villa in 1994). Eddie Howe's side are coming off the back of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in the last leg of the Premier League.
The two coaches prefaced tonight's duel.
We have a chance to reach our fifth Carabao Cup final in 10 years. I'd rather start 2-0 up, but I know perfectly well how many times we've played against Newcastle, the pride they showed. They are a Champions League team and it will be a difficult game. We have to be ready and play for our people, for our fans and try to get to Wembley in March.
– Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager
It will be a huge challenge. There is no bigger challenge than Manchester City. We believe in ourselves and we will try. We just have to try to win the game. If we have that mindset and attack the game, then let's see what we can do.
– Eddie Howe, Newcastle manager
