I spread salt along the baseboard before going to bed: ancient wisdom for protecting the home – the effect is better than modern means

A thin white strip of salt at the front door is not only a folk sign, but also a practical solution. Since ancient times, it has been believed that salt protects the house from negativity and “unkind guests.” Today this ritual is preserved by those who value simple, time-tested traditions.

But the benefits of salt are not only symbolic. From a physical point of view, crystals absorb moisture brought in from the street, reducing dampness in the hallway and preventing the development of mold. In addition, salt repels some insects – they avoid contact with a salty environment.

Housewives have long been using it for other purposes:

– to disinfect drains (a handful of salt in the sink or bathtub once a week helps remove organic residues);
– as a natural abrasive to combat old stains.
Interestingly, in ancient Rome, salt was so valuable that it was sometimes given to legionnaires instead of money. From the Latin sal (salt) comes the English salary – “salary” – which emphasizes its historical connection with stability and purity.
Eco-friendly cleaning experts confirm the effectiveness of salt, but remind: Before using on delicate surfaces, it is worth conducting a test – large crystals can scratch sensitive materials.
