Boat collision off the coast of Greece. 14 migrants dead


According to the spokesman, the boat with migrants was sailing at high speed towards Chios, which is located close to the coast of Turkey. The boat's drivers did not obey the order to turn around and resulted in a collision with a coast guard cutter.

As a result of the collision, at least 14 people in the boat died, 24 people, including 11 children, were saved. Two guard officers were injured.

It is not clear how many people were in the boat or what their nationality was. A search and rescue operation is underway with the participation of guard units, private boats and divers.

Greece has long been a country located on one of the main migration routes from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In 2015-2016, at the height of the migration crisis, almost a million migrants from Turkey landed on its islands, including Chios. In recent years, this number has decreased and Greece has significantly tightened border controls and patrols.
