A special session of the Inatsisartut (parliament) of Greenland was convened in the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk on Monday, devoted to American claims to this territory dependent on Denmark.

Before the debate, Nielsen pointed out that for 14 months the words about the need for the US to possess Greenland have been expressed not only by US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, but also by other American decision-makers and White House collaborators. – We consider these statements unacceptable. Greenland is part of the kingdom (Common Kingdom of Denmark) and will continue its development in accordance with the Act (on autonomy from Denmark) – emphasized the head of the Greenlandic government.

The Prime Minister recalled that Greenland had recently received great support, including: from EU countries. As he noted, it was also possible to establish dialogue with the US through high-level meetings. The so-called talks are underway working group on Greenland, which includes diplomats from Denmark, Greenland and the USA.

Nielsen called on MPs to “act together” to protect Greenland's autonomy within Denmark as well as its “ability to decide its own future and continue its development.”

Nielsen's government, representing the Democrats, enjoys the support of approximately 75 percent. parliamentarians who support Greenland's independence from Denmark, but only after achieving economic independence. Over the last year, there has been a rapprochement in Greenland-Danish relations. Nielsen stated, among other things, that Greenland prefers to be part of Denmark rather than the USA. The only opposition group is Naleraq, which supports the declaration of independence of Greenland as soon as possible and deepening relations with the USA. Recently, however, this demand has been stopped.

Sessions of the Greenlandic Parliament are rarely convened because of the long distances that MPs have to travel to get from their regions to Nuuk. Greenland, located in the Arctic, is the largest island in the world. (PAP)
