In the public space there are statements regarding the possible existence of a file at DIICOT about illegal betting in Romanian football. The statements were made, among others, by former parliamentarian Cristian Rizea.

Playresponsibly publishes today the official answer given by the state institution on this subject, after information was requested and the name of Gigi Becali, the patron of the FCSB champion, was submitted.
DIICOT confirmed that in April 2024 the criminal prosecution in rem (which targets facts and not persons) was launched, but the file was closed due to lack of evidence after one year and two months.

In the case you are referring to, on 02.04.2024, it was ordered to start the criminal prosecution in rem, under the aspect of committing the crimes of constituting an organized criminal group, an act provided for by art. 367 para. (1) Criminal Code, and fraud, an act provided for by art. 244 para. (1) and (2) Criminal Code, related to art. 256' Criminal Code.
Later, considering that the administered evidence showed no evidence of the existence of the materiality of the detained crimes, on 10.06.2025, the DIICOT – Central Structure prosecutors ordered the closure of the case.
