Former mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, sentenced in Romania to 10 years and 8 months in prison for corruption, was detained on Saturday at Thessaloniki, said Antena3 CNN.
Sorin Oprescu was taken under the escort of the Greek authorities to a car with numbers from Bucharest, according to witnesses, quoted by Antena3 CNN. Then, the former mayor was escorted back to the vehicle with which he had been brought to the airport parking lot, being taken over by law enforcement.
The Greek Ministry of Interior did not communicate the reason for the detention, writes G4Media.
Sorin Oprescu fled to Greece three years ago, shortly before he was sentenced to Romania to 10 years and 8 months in prison for corruption.
It had been initially arrested in 2022, but the teaching to Romania was refused. The Greek courts rejected the extradition request made by the Romanian authorities, invoking the health status of the former mayor and the conditions of the Romanian penitentiary system.
