The problem of February is familiar to everyone who sows seedlings at home: it’s gray outside, little light gets through the window, and thin sprouts begin to stretch towards the glass and become weak. There is a way to fix this without buying expensive shelving. It is enough to assemble a special shelf for plants with lighting from something that often gathers dust after renovation.
What you need to find:
- Basis for the frame: remnants of plastic pipes, unnecessary wooden slats or an old narrow bookcase will do.
- Shelf material: You can use laminate scraps, pieces of drywall, durable plywood or even plastic panels.
- How to fasten: pipe clamps, self-tapping screws or just a strong rope are suitable.
Light source: The most important part is the LED strip of white cool or neutral light. This is the only item you'll likely need to buy, but it will last for many seasons.
The frame is assembled according to the principle of a simple bookcase in several tiers. An LED strip is attached to the underside of each shelf. It is important to make the structure stable and provide the ability to raise or lower the shelves so that the distance from the lamp to the tops of the plants always remains about 15-20 centimeters. Such a display shelf can be placed in any convenient corner of the room, freeing up the window sills.
Plants no longer depend on the vagaries of the weather. They receive 12-14 hours of stable daylight every day. The light falls on them evenly from above, causing the stems to grow even and thick, and not tilt in one direction. In such comfortable conditions, all the strength of the sprouts is spent not on stretching in search of the sun, but on the development of strong roots and juicy green leaves.
Such a homemade rack fully justifies itself in the first season, eliminating disappointment and unnecessary expenses on buying frail market seedlings. But most importantly, it gives confidence that the future harvest will have the strongest and healthiest start.
