Russian parliamentarians want Moscow to use more powerful weapons, the so-called “weapons of revenge”, to achieve its military goals in Ukraine, said Friday the president of the State Duma (the lower house of the Russian legislature), Viacheslav Volodin, according to Reuters.

Viacheslav Volodin, who is also a member of Russia's Security Council, the Kremlin's main advisory body chaired directly by President Vladimir Putin, did not specify what kind of weapons he was referring to.

“Our troops are advancing. The deputies of the State Duma insist on the use of more powerful weapons – “weapons of revenge”. And on the fulfillment of the objectives of the special military operation”, said Volodin, using the term by which Russia refers to its war in Ukraine.

The “hawks” urge the continuation of the war

It is the second public statement in the last two days from the “hawks” at the top of Russian power who argue that Moscow must continue and even intensify its war effort, at a time when US President Donald Trump is trying to convince both sides to reach a peace agreement.

On Thursday, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadîrov told reporters: “I think the war must be brought to an end… I am against negotiations.”

Whether and when Russia should end the war rests entirely with Putin. The Kremlin insists that Russia would prefer to achieve its goals in Ukraine through diplomacy, but that it will do so through military means if this is not possible, notes Reuters.

In his post on Telegram, the head of the State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, also insulted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and said that Ukrainians will face “new problems from next week.”

And this in the context in which, on Friday, the spokesman of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Putin agreed to a personal request from Trump to stop the attacks on Kiev until Sunday, in order to create a more favorable climate for negotiations.

“Weapons of revenge” is the translation of the German term Vergeltungswaffen, which referred to long-range weapons designed for strategic bombing in World War II.
