The Norwegian government has ordered two more Type 212 CD submarines, manufactured at the German TKMS shipyard in Kiel, the company announced on Friday. Oslo has so far ordered four such units as part of the German-Norwegian program.
The extension of the order by Norway means one of the largest contracts in the company's history for the German shipyard TKMS (ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems).
The Type 212 CD submarines are being built as part of a joint program launched by Germany and Norway in 2021. A total of 10 units of this type have been ordered so far, six of which are intended for the German Navy and four for Norway.
Two ships for Norway are already under construction. The first one is scheduled to be handed over to the Norwegian Navy in 2029.
The TKMS shipyard in Kiel is also counting on another order from Canada, covering the construction of up to 12 type 212 CD ships. As the dpa agency points out, the competitor in this procedure is a manufacturer from South Korea, and the final decision is to be made this year.
In 2025, TKMS clearly recorded an increase in the value of orders. It amounted to a total of EUR 18.2 billion, which means an increase of 55%. compared to 2024, when it reached EUR 11.6 billion. The company employs over 9,000 people. employees, including approximately 3.3 thousand in Kiel.
Type 212 CD submarines are among the most modern conventionally powered units in the world. They are characterized by very low detection thanks to the advanced hull design and air-independent propulsion (AIP), which allows long-term underwater operation without the need to surface. These units are also equipped with modern combat systems and sensors, allowing for effective operations even in difficult operational conditions. (PAP)
