Records of passenger transport on the railway
Importantly, in each month of 2025, the railway recorded better results than the year before. An average passenger traveled an average of 69.9 km, and the average resident of the country used trains 11.7 times a year. This is the highest number since 1995, when the rate was 12.1 runs.
The increase in the number of travelers also translated into other indicators. Transport performance reached nearly 30.7 billion passenger kilometers, which means an increase of 7.8%. year to year.
Operational work was also record-breaking and amounted to over 225.3 million train kilometers, i.e. 9.6 percent. more than in 2024

The cargo market is under pressure
The situation in freight transport is completely different. In 2025, almost 217.8 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, 5.7 million tons less than a year earlier. This is the lowest result since at least 2012. Other parameters also dropped: transport performance to over 56.2 billion tonne-kilometers, and operational performance to 79.2 million train-kilometers.
Mean the transport distance of one tonne of cargo has shortened to approximately 258 km, which also shows the weakening of the market.
UTK: Cautious optimism regarding the situation on the freight transport market
Despite the difficult situation, UTK sees the first signs of improvement. “Starting from September 2025, we can speak of cautious optimism — for the first time since the beginning of the year, there was an increase in basic freight transport indicators. This gives hope that the goods sector will gradually adapt to the new market realities” – said Ignacy Góra, president of UTK.
As he added, it is becoming more and more important the transport of construction materials, aggregates and secondary raw materials is gaining, and intermodal transport maintains a stable positionwhich increased volumes in the first three quarters of the year.
