On Friday, January 30, Iran's first official reaction appeared after the European Union decided to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorist organizations, in a decision approved on Thursday, January 29, by the Foreign Ministers of the 27 member states.

The head of Tehran's judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, warned on Friday that the Europeans “will bear the consequences” this decision “nonsensical”. According to Iranian state television, the official pointed out that “there is no doubt that this hostile action will not go unanswered,” gulfnews notes.

The Revolutionary Guard Corps, considered the elite army of the Iranian regime, is accused of orchestrating the violent crackdown on demonstrations that rocked the Islamic Republic earlier this month.

Iran's armed forces denounced the EU's decision as “irresponsible” and “evil”, according to a statement released by the official Irna news agency, which points out that “the EU's illogical, irresponsible and malevolent decision was made without any doubt in blind obedience to the policies of the US and the Zionist regime (Israel)”.

On the other hand, non-governmental organizations monitoring the protests in Iran show the extent of the repression: according to a recent report by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), 6,373 people, including 5,993 protesters, were killed, 11,018 were seriously injured, and 42,486 were arrested.

The EU decision marks an intensification of international pressure on Tehran, but Iranian officials threaten repercussions for the European states involved, considering the measure a hostile gesture and a direct affront to the sovereignty and security of the regime in Tehran.
