The Romanian Air Force announced that, between March 9-16, 2026, Romanian military aircraft, together with aircraft belonging to Germany, Spain and the United States of America, will conduct training flights in several areas of the country.
Allied military equipment deployed in the 57th “Mihail Kogălniceanu” Air Base also participates in these activities. According to the statement, the aircraft will perform “training flights at low altitudes, as well as in supersonic mode, over the entire territory of the country”.
The representatives of the Air Force specify that the exercises will be carried out in compliance with all safety rules. “The training flights will take place with all air safety measures taken and the reduction of the noise impact on the population“, the Romanian Air Force transmitted.
According to the institution, “athese exercises aim to contribute to improving the reaction capacity of the aeronautical personnel in any situation”.
Constant allied presence at Mihail Kogălniceanu
In recent years, the 57th Air Base “Mihail Kogălniceanu” has become an important point for NATO operations in the region. For example, Turkey has previously sent fighter jets to Estonia and Romania as part of the Alliance's air policing missions.
Also, Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon planes have previously participated in Reinforced Air Police missions, alongside F-16 and MiG-21 aircraft and Romanian Air Force soldiers. The Spanish aircraft were also deployed at the 57 Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base.
At the same time, the military base at Mihail Kogălniceanu is undergoing an extensive modernization process. The new runway, approximately 3.5 kilometers long, the largest for military aircraft in Romania, will allow the operation of a full squadron of F-16s. The expanded infrastructure is thought to be able to accommodate up to 10,000 military personnel and their family members.
We remind you that the Romanian authorities recently also approved the temporary deployment of some United States troops and aircraft on the territory of the country, in the context of tensions in the Middle East.
