A fire broke out on the roof of the Grandes Alpes hotel, one of the most exclusive hotels in the French resort of Courchevel 1850, the Savoie prefecture announced. 83 people were evacuated, and so far no casualties have been reported.
According to the authorities, firefighters are facing difficulties in extinguishing the flames, due to the complex structure of the roof and thick snow that prevents access to vents.
Lieutenant-Colonel Emmanuel Viaud, from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) in Savoie, explained that there was a significant risk of the fire spreading to adjacent buildings.
The authorities asked the population to avoid the area and to allow the access of emergency vehicles. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Hotel Grandes Alpes is frequented by international tourists and is part of the 3 Valleys ski area, the largest ski area in the world, which includes six villages and around twenty four and five star hotels.
Courchevel 1850 is known for its luxury boutiques, gourmet restaurants, and even an airstrip for private jets.
