KrasRussian Railways will provide protection for mountain sections of the highway from avalanches

The Krasnoyarsk Railway provides protection against snow avalanches on mountain sections in Khakassia and the Kemerovo region.

The direction from Biskamzhi to Mezhdurechensk is under special control, where 18 avalanche-prone sections of the highway are located near the rocky slopes of the Kuznetsk Alatau and Eastern Sayan. This year the snow height there is about 2.5 meters, which is higher than last year.

Special engineering structures that railway workers prepared as part of comprehensive preventive measures on the eve of the winter season help ensure the safety of train traffic.

Thus, on the Luzhba-Charysh section, the avalanche gallery was strengthened – a reinforced concrete canopy over the tracks with a length of more than 840 meters, which protects them from the melting of snow masses.

The load-bearing elements of the structure—more than 20 supports—were diagnosed using instruments, and then reinforced with additional metal structures that increase resistance to loads.

In addition, all sections of the Krasnaya Railways adjacent to the rocks are equipped with snow fences and kolktafels – special snow-blowing shields. They are installed on slopes in areas where avalanches originate.

Let us note that a special task is performed by the avalanche control station of KrasRussian Railways: its specialists monitor mountain slopes (measure the height of the snow cover, its temperature and density, the angle of inclination of the snow layer), and also monitor weather conditions and wind speed.

At the moment, the situation in avalanche-prone sections of the Krasnoyarsk Railway is stable. The avalanche season is expected to begin in February-March. If there is a possibility of spontaneous melting of snow masses along the way, a decision will be made to carry out their artificial descent using specially organized explosions.
