New flexibility services platform. A recipe for “uncontrollable renewable energy”?

As TGE president Piotr Listwoń announced during Monday's event, the flexibility services platform will provide the distribution system and the transmission system operator with some flexibility in network management so that the network is not oversized during the electrical transformation process.

– The point is to in some locations, do not excessively expand the infrastructure […]sometimes it is worth building commercial infrastructure as part of the flexibility services platform, which will allow for effective network management and not excessive investment in it – said the president of TGE.

As he explained, energy-intensive entities, aggregators, storage operators and entities investing in renewable energy will be able to offer their options for reducing or increasing electricity consumption on the flexibility services platform.
“Tensions spill over into the network”
— We see a huge change in the energy market and it will accelerate. 2025 and this year will be breakthrough years for our system. It is not only about investments, but also about the speed of electrification of economies. This is done mainly with the use of renewable energy sources, which are not fully controllable, which causes tensions on the energy market and prices change. These tensions translate into the network – said Grzegorz Onichimowski, president of PSE.
— More and more often, for balance reasons, we have to reduce demand in a non-market way, and we would like this to happen at the market level. Moreover, there are more and more problems within the network below PSE, within the distribution networks. The flexibility market, which is already developing in many European countries, is an interesting proposition because it appeals to market participants, he added.

Vice-President of Tauron Dystrybucja Maciej Mróz informed that the company is strongly developing the area of flexibility services management.
— Today we have over 90 locations where we will purchase flexibility services in some future. The next step is to enable our customers to have a different business relationship with us as an operator, said Maciej Mróz.
“We invite other distributors”
The participants of the agreement hope that additional distributors will join the initiative.
— We invite other distributors to participate so that other companies can be included in this project as soon as possible. We consider it important from the point of view of the future of the power system, said Grzegorz Onichimowski, president of PSE.
– I think that TGE is a partner that operates on the market technologically and has the competence to support us as those who will create this market – said the vice-president of Tauron Dystrybucja.
The president of TGE said that he would like to create one platform for the entire country due to cost and functional efficiency.
When asked about the planned schedule for the creation of the platform, he replied that the goal was to launch it as soon as possible. Working teams will be created to work on the product offer.
– I wish it was like that the platform will definitely be created next year – said Piotr Listwoń.
