There is snow outside the window, and it’s May on the windowsill: how a drop of iodine makes geraniums bloom in winter

In winter, window sills often look dull: plants have slowed down, and there is no talk of lush flowering. But there is an exception – geranium. This unpretentious flower is capable of producing bright fireworks even on short cloudy days. The secret is simple and lies not in store-bought fertilizers, but in an ordinary home medicine cabinet. One drop of iodine, and geranium forgets about hibernation.

During the cold period, any indoor plant lives in economy mode. There is little light, the air is dry, growth stops. Geranium accumulates strength in its stems and leaves, postponing flowering until better times. To “deceive” nature, you need to give it an exact signal to action. Iodine becomes such a signal.

This element is an important participant in metabolism. In microdoses, it works as a catalyst: awakens dormant buds, strengthens the immune system and helps the plant absorb nutrients from the soil. Essentially, iodine feeding imitates ideal spring conditions, giving the command: “It’s time to bloom!”

Important rule: only solution, and only on wet soil

Pure iodine that gets on the roots or stems causes a severe burn. All the magic is in proper breeding and accuracy.

How to prepare a “drink” for flowering:

  • 1 liter of settled water at room temperature.
  • 1 drop of pharmaceutical alcohol solution of iodine 5%.
  • 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide 3% (optional, but it will enrich the water with oxygen and protect against fungus).
  • Mix everything thoroughly in a watering can. You can water geraniums with this solution no more than once every three to four weeks, exclusively in winter and early spring.

Step-by-step instructions for safe feeding

A couple of hours before the procedure, water the geranium with plain water. The soil in the pot should become well moist. This will protect fine root hairs from aggressive influences.

Prepare iodine solution according to the recipe above.

Pour the solution strictly along the wall of the pot, slowly moving in a circle. Avoid contact with stem and leaves. For a medium-sized pot (12-15 cm in diameter), use no more than 50 ml (about a quarter cup) of the prepared solution.

After feeding, place the geranium in the brightest place. Even winter diffused light in combination with such stimulation will give an amazing effect.
What you will see in 2-3 weeks

The result will not be long in coming. At first, the plant may produce a few new, strong leaves. Then flower stalks will begin to appear from the axils. The buds will form more actively, and the caps of the inflorescences themselves will become noticeably larger and brighter. Flowering will be long and abundant.

Answers to frequently asked questions

What if geraniums don’t bloom even with iodine?

There may be several reasons: too large a pot (geranium blooms when the roots are crowded), lack of light, lack of autumn pruning or too warm wintering. Iodine is a helper, not a magic wand.

Is this fertilizer suitable for other flowers?

You can try it with caution on pelargoniums, petunias and fuchsias. But this method is not suitable for bulbs, orchids or succulents.

When should we expect the first flowering?

If the plant was healthy, the first buds may appear 2-4 weeks after the first feeding.
