Referring to the Mercosur negotiations, the president explained that Romania has a clear official position: “Romania has a official position formed for about 10 years. Romania's position is supportive of Mercosur. When there were some question marks from farmers, I agreed, we supported France in this debate and, following this negotiation within the Union, additional benefits were obtained for European farmers and also for Romanian farmers“.
Political attacks and the governing coalition
The president also commented on the political attacks on the prime minister: “It's democracy, it's freedom for everyone to say what they want about the political scene. If the perception of the governing coalition is negative on the financial markets, Romania borrows 0.2, 0.3, 0.4% more expensively. We must separate political action from political statement“.
Regarding the future of the prime minister, Nicușor Dan stated: “There is a coalition of four parties. The agreement says that by April next year, the PNL will be the prime minister. Under no circumstances would I agree to speak of assumptions. It is very good that these four parties plus the national minorities have accepted to be in government”.
Foreign visits and economic plans
The President also explained the purpose of the foreign visits, including the trip to Davos: “Let's always separate serious matters from popcorn, from metaphors, from words that can be funny, but we are talking about very serious matters. I try to optimize the time in this position and I try to use the foreign trips to get things for Romania”.
About the relationship with Armenia and the economic plan for the region, Nicușor Dan said: “I had a very open, cordial discussion with the Armenian Prime Minister at the European political community. In the next period, we must build the substance so that, when we go to the Caucasus, we visit the countries of the Caucasus with an economic plan that will bring some billions to Romania. That, in my opinion, is my job“.
The President also commented on the local referendums and the budget for 2026: “A principle of democracy is that citizens are right. I asked the people of Bucharest what they want. The people of Bucharest answered that we must be serious”.
The relationship with Ukraine
Regarding the relationship with Ukraine, Nicușor Dan clearly explained the dual citizenship situation: “Ukraine has found that, following the war that began four years ago, it has citizens in many European or world states. It was not an intention to exclude Romania, it was an intention to solve the problem of Ukrainian citizens who had to emigrate”.
Finally, the president explained the reason for his visit to Iași on the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities: “I was invited, I came. It's an important holiday and I think it's important in times of doubt to remember those worthy historical moments in our history and honor them. There were people who used to be at the limit and now with 10% less due to inflation, it's not easy at all. I hope we manage to balance this situation in a relatively short time”.
