On January 24, every year, the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities is celebrated. In 2026, it will be 167 years since the unanimous election on January 24, 1859 of Alexandru Ioan Cuza as ruler of Wallachia, after he had been elected ruler of Moldavia on January 5, 1859, which in fact represented the union of the two Romanian principalities and, at the same time, an important first step on the way to the realization of the Romanian unitary national state, desired to be achieved on December 1 1918, notes Agerpres.

President Nicușor Dan will be in Focșani and Iași on Saturday, on the Day of the Union of the Principalities, while Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will participate in the ceremony organized at the monument of ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Bucharest.

According to the program announced by the Presidential Administration, in the first part of the day, the head of state will visit the “Unirea” National College in Focșani, on which occasion he will decorate the educational institution for its 160th anniversary.

From 11:00, the president will take part in the events on the occasion of the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, organized in the Union Square in Focșani.

Later, he will go to Iasi, where he will participate in the ceremony organized in Piața Unirii. According to News.ro, the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, was invited, but will not participate.

For his part, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will be present in Bucharest, from 10:00 a.m., at the military and religious ceremony organized on the occasion of the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, at the monument of ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza on Aleea Dealul Patriarhiei, according to the Press Office of the Executive.

Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu called his supporters, on Saturday, in the Carol Park in Bucharest, where he says he will lay a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero. “Union is made through union. (…) I invite you to honor, by gesture and presence, the hora of brotherhood left by our forefathers”, wrote Georgescu. in a Facebook message.

The AUR leader, George Simion, stated that the AUR representatives will go to the Monument to the Unknown Hero, but also to Iași and Focșani.
