Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday she hoped US President Donald Trump would end the conflict in Ukraine so she could nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I hope that one day we will be able to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump. I trust that if he makes a difference… in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, for Ukraine as well, then finally we will be able to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Giorgia Meloni said in a press conference after meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

On Thursday, Donald Trump unveiled his new “Board of Peace,” originally designed to oversee the Gaza ceasefire and the relaunch of the territory. The initiative later evolved into a mechanism that aims to address a wide range of international conflicts.

Italy was invited to join this “Council”, but Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she had told Trump that Italy was facing “constitutional problems” in doing so.

On Thursday, the European Union's foreign policy service raised questions about the powers that Donald Trump would have in the “Peace Council”. In a confidential analysis seen by Reuters, dated Jan. 19 and sent to member states, the European External Action Service expresses concern about the concentration of power in Trump's hands.

The Charter of the “Peace Council” “raises a problem from the perspective of the constitutional principles of the EU”, and “the autonomy of the legal order of the Union also opposes the concentration of powers in the hands of the President of the Council”, the document states.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Thursday that she “offered” Donald Trump the Nobel Peace Prize medal. Trump, who initially said Machado was not qualified to lead Venezuela after Maduro's kidnapping, later said he was considering her involvement in some form or another in Venezuela's political life.
