Greenland in the US's sights
Greenland, the largest island in the world, remains an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but has attracted the attention of the United States for years. In January, President Donald Trump returned to the idea of taking over the island, which had already caused controversy. Authorities in Copenhagen and Nuuk strongly oppose such plans.

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump demanded the immediate start of negotiations regarding the purchase of Greenland by the US. At the same time, he assured that the United States “probably” would not use force to take the island. On Wednesday, after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutt, Trump announced that he had agreed on a framework for a future agreement on Greenland and the Arctic.
The US president also added that he withdrew the threat to impose tariffs on European countries that sent their military delegations to Greenland. These countries included Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom.
Diplomatic storm over the Arctic
Greenland plays a strategic role in the Arctic region, which makes it an object of interest to world powers. Tensions between the US and Denmark and its European allies in NATO show that the island has become a field of geopolitical competition. The Danish Prime Minister, despite pressure from the United States, avoids clear declarations regarding the end of the crisis. When asked by one of the journalists whether the situation around Greenland has already been resolved, Frederiksen did not provide an answer.
The current visit of the Prime Minister of Denmark to Greenland aims not only to show support for its inhabitants, but also to emphasize the unity of the Kingdom of Denmark in the face of international tensions.
