The aviator-style sunglasses worn by French President Emmanuel Macron have caught the attention of the public, with social media users debating his choice for the “Top Gun” look in his Davos speech as he criticized US President Donald Trump over Greenland.
The French leader wore dark, reflective sunglasses as he spoke at the annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos on Tuesday.

Memes, comments and speculation about his appearance have run rampant on social media, with some supporters praising him for his 'Top Gun' look, while detractors criticized him for being too bombastic or speculated about his health.
Macron's press office said the choice to wear sunglasses during his speech, which took place indoors, was to protect his eyes due to a ruptured blood vessel in one eye.
One meme, titled “Duel in Davos”, was styled as a parody of the movie Top Gun, with Macron and Trump staring at each other, both wearing military-style uniforms, and Macron, looking tiny next to Trump, wearing oversized aviator sunglasses.
References to the 1986 film starring Tom Cruise were ubiquitous.

Even Trump weighed in, with the US leader mocking Macron in his speech in Davos on Wednesday for wearing glasses.
“I saw him yesterday with those nice sunglasses. What the hell happened?” Trump said during his speech in Switzerland. “I actually like him, although it's hard to believe,” Trump mocked the French president.

Meanwhile, some of Macron's colleagues also started to weigh in, with European Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad posting a version of the “Soyboy vs Yes Chad” meme with Chad wearing aviator glasses and wrapped in a French flag.
Italian group iVision Tech, owner of the Henry Jullien brand, said the model of glasses worn by Macron is the Pacific S 01, which is priced at 659 euros ($770) on its website. The group said it sent Macron the sunglasses as a gift, but that he insisted on paying for them and made sure they were made in France.
Milan-listed shares of the Italian group rose nearly 6 percent on Wednesday.
“The news this morning was a surprise,” said the group's chief executive, Stefano Fulchir. “We were flooded with calls and requests on the site… The site went down,” added Fulchir.
