Mourning in Romanian sport: a former world vice-champion in kayak has died

Former European and world vice-champion Eugen Botez died on Tuesday at the age of 77, the Romanian Kayak-Canoe Federation announced on its Facebook page.

Botez was born on October 19, 1948 and took his first steps in kayaking at the nautical base of the Voința Arad club, after which he was registered at CS Dinamo Bucharest.
He was champion and medalist at the junior and senior national championships and represented Romanian kayaking at numerous international regattas, at the European junior and senior championships, as well as at the senior World Championships.
At the 1967 European Junior Championships (Karstad) he won two gold medals, in kayak-2 over 500 m and in kayak-4 over 500 m. Specialized in the 4×500 m relay event, he contributed to winning silver medals at the European Championships in 1969 (Moscow), at the World Championships in 1970 (Copenhagen). He obtained a silver in the 4×500 m relay, together with Aurel Vernescu, Mihai Zafiu and Ion Iacob, and in the 1971 edition (Belgrade).
He became a Master of Sports.
The vigil will take place on January 21, at 19:00, at the Kuki Funeral Home (Strada Cocorilor no. 6, Arad), and the funeral will take place on January 22, at 12:00, at the Eternitatea Cemetery (UTA area).
