Folk calendar
Emelin day, Emelyan winter.
This day got its name in memory of the Venerable Bishop Emilian of Cyzicus, who lived in the 9th century.
The parental decision about marriage did not always coincide with the wishes of the groom, but it was believed that if the marriage was “drenched” in strong drinks, the hated union would more likely come to what is called “tolerate and fall in love.”
On this day it was customary to treat godfather and godfather. It was believed that this would bring health to children. When they came to a dinner party, godfathers and godfathers brought with them a gift – a bar of soap and a towel. When bathing the child for the first time, he should be washed with this soap and dried with this towel, saying: “Water off a duck’s back, thinness off my child!”
In addition, there was a custom of telling fairy tales, fables, and interesting stories. To do this, the whole family gathered in the house in the evening. Hence the well-known saying: “Shallow, Emelya, your week!”
Emelyan, like Ivan the Hawk Moth, bore the nickname Perezimnik, which meant the turn of winter to spring and promised a quick change in the weather. At the same time, Emelyan is also a “whirlwind.” A snowstorm on this day was considered a common occurrence, but the direction of the wind was noted. If it blows from the south, it means that the summer will be rich in thunderstorms.
