US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his new “Council for Peace” could “eventually” replace the United Nations, which he has criticized for being ineffective in ending wars, CNN notes.

“The UN just hasn't been very helpful. I'm a big supporter of the potential of the UN, but it's never lived up to that potential,” Trump told reporters during a White House news conference. “The UN should have solved every one of the wars I solved. I never called them, it never even occurred to me to do so.”

The Peace Council was created as part of Trump's deal to end the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. This week, he extended invitations to world leaders to join the body, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Reactions were, however, mixed. French President Emmanuel Macron said he would not accept the invitation, citing questions about the council's mandate and remit.

Earlier on Tuesday, UN humanitarian aid coordinator Tom Fletcher said Trump's proposed Peace Council would not replace the United Nations.

“It's very clear to me and to my colleagues that the UN is not going anywhere,” Fletcher said in an interview with CNN.
