If you want to grow radishes that remain tender even when overgrown, do not become bitter, and do not crack after two days, choose varieties with a short ripening period, dense flesh and resistance to bolting. Such radishes do not “wooden” in the garden, do not lose their juiciness in the refrigerator and delight with their crunch from the first to the last week of harvesting.
Among all the diversity, three proven varieties for spring and autumn plantings stand out.
18 days – one of the earliest varieties. The root vegetables are small, round, bright red, with a white juicy core. Ripens literally 2–3 weeks after germination. The pulp is tender, sweet, without the slightest bitterness. Ideal for the first spring salad. The main thing is not to delay cleaning: in the heat it can quickly go to waste.
French breakfast – an elegant elongated radish with a white tip and a pink “skirt”. The skin is thin, the flesh is dense but not watery, the taste is soft, slightly nutty, without pungency. Does not crack even if cleaning is delayed for 3-4 days. Grows well both in open ground and in greenhouses. Suitable for both spring and replanting in August.
Cherry Belle – an American variety with perfectly round root crops the size of a cherry. Bright red skin, snow-white flesh, crunch – like a fresh cucumber. Resistant to bolting, does not form voids even when overgrown. Tolerates light shading and temperature changes well. It makes ideal portions for children and beautiful snacks for the holiday table.
How to grow without bitterness and emptiness:
- Sow often, but thinly: thickening causes stretching and bolting.
- Water regularly, but in moderation: when there is drought, radishes become bitter, and when there is too much water, they crack.
- Harvest on time: most varieties are ready for harvesting 20–28 days after germination.
- For the second wave of harvest, sow in late July – early August; autumn radishes are even sweeter.
Such radishes will decorate any salad, an addition to sandwiches or an independent snack with salt and sour cream.
