Ciprian Ciucu, the capital's mayor: “In order to modernize the tram lines, we must first modernize the water and sewage network. There will be discomfort”

The general mayor of the capital announces that the modernization of the water and sewage network must be a priority in the areas where the tram lines are to be rehabilitated. On Monday, Ciprian Ciucu had a meeting with the management of Apa Nova, to establish the order of the investments and to coordinate the interventions, so that the works are not done twice.

“Bucharest needs safe, rehabilitated tram lines! PMB recently obtained funding of 265.5 million euros for the modernization of tram lines and 76.5 million euros for the purchase of trams. I have to make sure that by 2029 they will all be ready because otherwise we will give the money back, and this would be unacceptable! It is not enough to rehabilitate the tracks, we must also invest in the water-sewer network which intersect these tram lines, because it is not normal to work twice and then have new breakdowns, dig again and throw the money out the window.
That's why today I called the management of Apa Nova to a discussion to prioritize these investments in the water-sewer network and to ensure the coordination of the works: to be able to modernize the network of tram lines, we must first modernize the water and sewage network!”, wrote Ciprian Ciucu, in a post on Facebook.
The mayor explained that “This means planning”
“We need design and signage, then execution of water-sewage works and then works on the tram lines! Am asked the Investment Directorate of PMB and management of APA Nova by Monday to organize several coordination meetings with all the builders who will execute the works, both on the water-canal and on the tram infrastructure, so as to prioritize them and start the works as quickly as possible”, Ciucu also said.
“We will tackle several construction sites at once”
Ciucu warns that the works will affect public transport in the coming years, and STB will have to temporarily replace trams with buses.
“I know, there will clearly be a discomfort in Bucharest, a discomfort of travelers, because we will tackle several construction sites at once. But we have nothing to do, we cannot miss this money either. I will make sure that the works once started are completed on time. Last week I met with the management of the European Investment Bank to ensure the necessary co-financing, of 170 million euros, for the works to be executed on time! I will come back with clear details about these projects, as soon as we have the prioritization worked out!”, the mayor also said.
The mayor presented the lots where they will have works in the coming years.
