At least seven people have died and an unknown number of people are still trapped in two high-speed train sets that derailed in southern Spain.
The number of confirmed deaths has reached seven. Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that this number could rise as emergency services remove all passengers who were trapped in the two derailed trains.
Initially, there were two victims, but sources from the Civil Guard told RTVE that the number of dead has reached five. The intervention crews are trying to remove the passengers stuck in the two seats, and the number of injured remains difficult to determine for the time being.
The accident took place in Adamuz, near Cordoba. The number of injured passengers is currently unknown, the Spanish Civil Guard said, quoted by Reuters.
In Córdoba, a long-distance Iryo train that was circulating from Málaga to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha collided with an AVE that was circulating in the opposite direction.

According to the Spanish public television RTVE, a train traveling on the route Malaga – Madrid derailed at a change of track in Adamuz and entered the adjacent line, which was just passing another train going from Huelva to the capital of Spain.
A journalist on the train that derailed reported that the last two carriages jumped off the tracks.
“We were in the first car. There was a noise like an earthquake when the train derailed. They immediately called the people with medical training who could provide help, used hammers to break the windows and evacuated us all,” reported journalist Salvador Jimenez.
Images posted on social media showed several passengers trying to get out of the train seats following the impact.
