Denmark's diplomatic offensive
The head of Danish diplomacy, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, visited Oslo on Sunday, where he discussed issues related to Arctic security with the Norwegian authorities. Norway, like Denmark, supports Greenland and is also on the list of countries threatened by American tariffs.
Rasmussen has meetings scheduled in the coming days with the foreign ministers of Britain and Sweden, which are also targeted by Trump. According to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks will cover both commercial and strategic issues, including Arctic security.
At the same time, on Monday in Brussels, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt are to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. This meeting will take place in the context of Denmark inviting allies from European NATO countries to joint military exercises in Greenland.
Greenland at the center of geopolitics
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has long attracted interest from the United States due to its strategic location and rich natural resources. Trump has previously tried to acquire the island, which was met with a clear refusal from Copenhagen.
The announcement of imposing tariffs on countries supporting Denmark and Greenland caused a wave of criticism in Europe. The Danish Prime Minister emphasized that Europe must remain united in the face of Washington's attempts to exert pressure.
Trump, who announced his plans on Saturday, argued that the tariffs were a response to the “unfavorable” position of European countries towards his claims. The countries to be subject to tariffs include: Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway.
