European Union leaders will meet “in the coming days” to coordinate their response to Greenland after US President Donald Trump's threats, European Council President Antonio Costa announced Sunday evening.
According to a European official quoted by AFP, Costa plans to organize this summit on Thursday, January 22, in Brussels.
Donald Trump on Saturday threatened several European countries – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland – to impose additional tariffs on them until “an agreement for the full and complete sale of Greenland” is reached. This surcharge, of 10%, will become effective from February 1 and could reach 25% on June 1, he said.
On Sunday, the EU faced calls to institute a previously unused set of economic countermeasures known as the “Anti-Coercion Tool” as part of the bloc's response to the US president's threats of tariffs against European allies over Greenland.
And the ambassadors from the 27 member states met during this evening and discussed the response measures. According to the Financial Times, cited by Reuters, there are two options being considered, both of which could affect American companies doing business with or in Europe.
One scenario envisages a similar response, namely the imposition of tariffs on €93 billion worth of US imports. The second scenario is the restriction of the access of American companies to the common market of the European Union.
These two options would be used as an argument by the European leaders during the discussions they will have with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Economic Forum in Davos, which will also take place next week, writes the Financial Times citing officials involved in the preparation of the meetings in Switzerland.
