Zosima the beekeeper

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Venerable Martyr Zosima the Hermit of Cilicia. But in the popular consciousness, this day is associated with the name of Zosima Solovetsky, an Orthodox saint who founded a famous monastery. He is considered the patron saint of beekeepers and beekeepers, so they prayed to him for good honey collection. The memory of Zosima Solovetsky is celebrated on April 30, however, January 17, Zosima’s name day, is called the beekeeper.

There is also a special sign: if there is a lot of snow on this day, it will be a honey year. To respect Zosima, honey and delicacies made from it were always placed on the table – for example, gingerbread cookies or honey toffees.

Christmas time is coming to an end, and the evil spirits are trying to do as much bad things as possible. Therefore, on the day of Zosima, it was customary to drive out devils. Men and women put on their sheepskin coats inside out and went out into the street, taking pokers with them. At the head of the procession they carried burning rags. People walked from courtyard to courtyard and shouted: “Come out, evil spirits!”

At this time they were “beating the devil” – they beat (for fun, of course) one of the men dressed in a shaggy sheepskin coat. After this, they lit a fire and celebrated the victory over evil spirits. Guys and girls jumped over fire to improve their health and happiness.

Curious girls, wanting to know the future, went out into the yard in the evening to notice the stars. If the Big Dipper was on the right, this meant that Christmas fortune-telling for the betrothed would certainly come true. If a girl saw the Milky Way in front of her, this foreshadowed another year of life waiting for the groom.

They also wondered about the weather that day. A clear sky with a full moon foreshadowed a strong flood. And if it’s still frosty under a cloudless sky, that means the cold will continue for a long time.
