It is “out of the question” for the United States to acquire Greenland, Copenhagen foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Thursday in response to comments made by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, AFP reports.
“This is out of the question. It is not what we want in Denmark, nor in Greenland, and it is against all international rules,” stressed Lars Lokke Rasmussen, on national broadcaster DR.
Such a takeover of Greenland “violates our sovereignty”, insisted the Danish foreign minister, quoted by Agerpres.
Karoline Leavitt stated, in a press conference, that the deployment of European troops in Greenland, promised to Denmark by several European NATO member states, “will not influence (US President Donald Trump's) objective to take control” of the Arctic island, strategically positioned and rich in natural resources.
US Vice President JD Vance and Washington's top diplomat Marco Rubio welcomed Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt to the White House on Wednesday.
At that meeting, it was agreed to create a working group that ministers Rasmussen and Motzfeldt said would aim to address “disagreements” with Washington.
But the White House offered a different version of that goal, saying that within the working group “technical discussions will continue regarding the purchase of Greenland” by the US.
