US President Donald Trump said once again that “Greenland is very important to national security” on Wednesday, after the meeting in Washington between the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and US officials, reports Reuters.
Also on Wednesday, prior to Trump's statement, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Greenland is very important to national security, including Denmark's,” the US president said. “And the problem is that Denmark can't do anything about it if Russia or China wants to occupy Greenland, but we can do everything. You learned that last week about Venezuela,” he added, referring to the operation in which US forces captured Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
“I think something will work out,” Trump said.
Donald Trump “wants to conquer Greenland”
After meeting US officials, the Danish foreign minister said the sides' positions “continue to differ” but a working group would be created to try to harmonize them.
Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the “new security situation in the Arctic” needs a response, but it must not affect “the territorial integrity of Denmark and the right to self-determination of the Greenlandic people”.
“It is clear that the president has a desire to conquer Greenland, and we have said very, very clearly that this is not in the interest of the Kingdom (Denmark),” Rasmussen said, as quoted by The Guardian.
