The Polish energy system broke a record. For the first time, over 30 GW of power

“A few days ago we recorded a record power demand – 29.2 GW gross. Today, for the first time in history, domestic generation exceeded 30 GW of power” wrote the minister on the X social media platform.
“Importantly, with exports of nearly 2.5 GW. This is proof of how our energy system works stably and keeps up with growing needs – with a solid reserve“- he emphasized.
Record power demand
Just a few days earlier, on Friday, January 9, 2026, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) announced record demand for power in the National Power System (NPS). At 11:45 it amounted to 27.6 GW net, which corresponds to 29.2 GW gross. The previous record, set on January 9, 2024, was 28.6 GW gross.
As explained by the operator, the main reason for the high demand was the low air temperature, which dropped even to -10 degrees Celsius during the day. PSE emphasized that the situation is constantly monitored and PSE's work is planned in accordance with standard procedures.

“Currently, balance sheet problems are not expected to occur in the near future,” the operator said.
Gross and net power. What do these terms mean?
It is worth recalling that gross power demand includes all the energy produced by power plants before it is used for their internal needs and auxiliary equipment. In turn, net power demand is the energy actually available to consumers or the network, after subtracting internal consumption.

Record results and the stability of the energy system are proof of the growing capabilities of the Polish energy infrastructure, which must meet the increasing expectations of customers, both domestic and foreign.
