“A few days ago, we recorded a record demand for power – 29.2 GW gross. Today, for the first time in history, domestic generation exceeded 30 GW of power. Importantly, with exports of nearly 2.5 GW. This is proof of how stably our energy system works and keeps up with growing needs – with a solid reserve,” wrote Motyka.

Earlier, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne announced that on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 11:45 a record high demand for power in the history of the National Power System was recorded, at the level of 27.6 GW net (29.2 GW gross). The previous highest power demand was recorded on January 9, 2024. At that time it amounted to 28.6 GW gross.

As PSE reported on Monday, the high demand was mainly due to the low air temperature, reaching -10°C during the day. The operator informed that it monitors the situation on an ongoing basis and plans the work of the National Power System in accordance with standard procedures. As stated, there are currently no forecasts of balance sheet problems in the near future.

Gross power demand means the total power produced by sources before subtracting the energy used for the power plant's own needs and auxiliary equipment. Net power demand means the power actually available to consumers or the network, after taking into account internal needs. (PAP Business)
