However, the president stated that many people in the country support the path to membership in the European Union, which, in her opinion, “helps them survive and preserve democracy.”
Russia is pressing on Moldova
In September, the parliamentary elections in Moldova were won by the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS, from which Maia Sandu comes), supported by nearly half of the voters. It won almost twice as many votes as the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), which brings together pro-Russian socialists and communists. Both the vote and the preceding election campaign were called the “final battle” in the public space due to Russia's strong involvement, attempts to bribe voters and a massive disinformation campaign against the government in Chisinau.
All these actions were intended to lead to the loss of the majority by President Maja Sandu's party and to open the way to power for groups calling for normalization of relations with Moscow.
