Russian forces launched a massive attack on Kiev and Kharkiv on the night of Monday to Tuesday, causing casualties among the population and further damage to the infrastructure in the middle of winter. It was the most intense wave of missile attacks this year launched by the Russians on Ukraine, Reuters reports.
In Kiev, the head of the military administration, Timur Tkachenko, said that there was a short but intense missile attack in the Ukrainian capital. Ukraine's electricity grid operator Ukrenergo later said emergency power cuts had been imposed in Kiev.
DTEK, a private Ukrainian energy company, said the Russian attack had severely damaged equipment at one of its thermal plants.
Witnesses cited by Reuters heard explosions in the city, and Telegram channels monitoring Ukraine reported that about 20 ballistic missiles were launched within about an hour during the night.
Four dead in Kharkiv
In Kharkiv, 30 km from the border, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the Russians hit a postal terminal on the outskirts of the city, destroying buildings and starting several fires over an area of about 500 square meters.
Regional governor Oleh Sîniehubov said that four people died in the attack and six others were injured.
According to Ukrainian officials, the Russians used a double-strike tactic. First, they attacked with ballistic missiles, then with attack drones.
Russia has repeatedly hit Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones since launching its invasion in February 2022, targeting energy infrastructure and leaving millions without electricity and heating in the winter as Kiev's defenses struggle to intercept the attacks.
