The German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung warned that the European Union as an alliance of liberal democracies may cease to exist if the right wing wins in the elections in France and Poland in 2027. Then, according to the newspaper, Trump, Putin and Xi will fight for the spoils, and the past will return in Germany in the form of the AfD.

In the article, “SZ” outlined a vision of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse who are currently spreading fear and terror in Germany. “They herald the rise of right-wing extremism, economic collapse, World War III, climate catastrophe. Each of them has the face of Donald Trump,” the daily noted. As he added, “no one takes seriously the fifth horseman of the apocalypse, Trump”, who – according to the newspaper – heralds the collapse of the EU in 2027.

In the opinion of “SZ”, the European Union as a political project is seriously threatened by the war machine of Russia, the economic power of China, and, above all, by the “wrecker Donald Trump”. “The most terrifying thing is that nowhere in Europe no one seems to be seriously worried about the EU. Yet there are reasons to panic,” said the daily.

He pointed out that some member states are already moving away from the basic principles of the Community. As examples, “SZ” gave Hungary, Slovakia, and – in the context of support for Ukraine – the Czech Republic. According to the newspaper, possible victories of the right wing in France and Poland could be a breakthrough, as they would move the EU towards a nationalist course and limit it to the role of a common economic space.

According to “SZ”, there are less than two years left to convince citizens that the EU works. According to the newspaper, by 2027 the EU would have to significantly accelerate economic development, adopt a new multi-annual budget and ensure the full functioning of the common asylum system. However, the key challenge remains to create a common defense policy and, in the longer term, also the foundations for a European army.

The German daily assessed that Europe's security dependence on the United States was one of the EU's greatest design errors.

“Saving the EU is the key to stopping all other horsemen of the Apocalypse. In an ideal world, there would now be mass demonstrations in favor of a common European policy. In reality, it is more likely that the great idea that has brought peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity to the continent for 80 years will die due to lack of citizen interest,” concludes “SZ”.
