The decision comes amid falling demand and deep transformations in the auto industry, part of a global company restructuring plan.

The restructuring will involve the phasing out of around 1,010 jobs and production at the plant will be halted until mid-2027. The company says it has not identified “no viable option” for the continuation of the unit's activity, according to Profit.

“The profound transformations in the entire automotive industry have caused Adient to face significant commercial pressures and, in this context, the company anticipates the interruption of operations at the Ploiesti plant”, it is shown in the press release.

Adient officials explain that the decision is necessary to maintain resilience and competitiveness in the long term, given the uncertainty related to the pace of the transition to electric mobility, the decrease in demand and the increase in competition.

“The planned restructuring would involve phasing out around 1,010 jobs as well as shutting down production by mid-2027,” the company explained.

According to the cited source, Adient has been present in Romania since 2000 and has over 5,800 employees, operating six production units in Jimbolia, Craiova, Poiana Lacului, Bradu, Ploiești and Pitești.

The factory in Ploiești specializes in car upholstery, just like the unit in Pitesti, which produces for premium brands such as Mercedes and BMW.

Globally, the company has more than 75,000 employees in 29 countries and more than 200 manufacturing and assembly facilities. Adient supplies car seats to some of the world's largest manufacturers, including Stellantis, Renault, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Ford and General Motors.

The new round of layoffs and other restructuring measures will generate a total cost of $125 million. The company estimates that as a result of these measures, operating costs will be reduced by approximately $60 million per year.

In Prahova county, the unemployment rate in 2025 was 2.22%, below the national average of 3.12%, according to AJOFM Prahova data.
