2025 was an exceptional year for Pillar II of compulsory private pensions, which recorded the best return since its inception. Private pension funds achieved an average gain of almost 20%, supported by the positive evolution of the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

For taxpayers, that translates into significant increases in individual accounts. For example, a Romanian who paid monthly contributions to Pillar II since 2008 and who has an average salary – approximately 1,000 euros net – reached a balance of over 55,000 lei at the end of 2025.

From this amount, the reported gain for 2025, represented in green in the fund reports, is the largest in the history of Pillar II, being about 6,000 lei higher than last year.

The evolution of Pillar II far exceeds inflation, although not all years have been equally favorable. In 2022, for example, the funds posted losses as a result of the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis.

Pillar II funds invest approximately two-thirds of their assets in government securities and the rest in shares and other financial instruments, including indirectly in the stock market.

This strategy made 2025 a record year, but experts warn that returns can vary from year to year.
