Management of the Jebel Psychiatric Hospital: The scabies outbreak is located. DSP is to identify the source of infection

At the Jebel Psychiatric Hospital and Safety Measures (SPMS), where three cases of scabies (mange) were detected among patients, the epidemiological situation is under control, without the outbreak expanding, and the Timiş Public Health Directorate (DSP) is carrying out an epidemiological investigation to identify the source, the manager of the hospital, Marius-Ciprian Olaru, told Agerpres on Monday.

The hospital unit currently cares for 466 hospitalized patients based on art. 110 of the Criminal Code, coming from 14 counties, their number being fluctuating, depending on the dispositions of the judicial bodies and the measures ordered.

“At the moment, the epidemiological situation within the unit is under control, without the spread of the outbreak. The first cases of scabies were medically confirmed on December 30, 2025, following the dermatological consultation. The diagnosed patients are under specific treatment, and their evolution is favorable, without complications. In previous years, there were isolated cases, aspect correlated with the specifics of the unit and the particularities of the safety measures regime, in the context of the patients' origin from socially vulnerable backgrounds. Currently, the epidemiological investigation is underway, with the objective of identifying the source and establishing the epidemiological context“, explained Marius-Ciprian Olaru.

The hospital manager specified that the most common psychiatric diagnoses among patients are schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders and mental disorders associated with the consumption of alcohol and psychoactive substances.

“Regarding somatic comorbidities, the most common are diabetes mellitus and hypertension, chronic diseases common in the general population, monitored and treated according to medical protocols. The hospital has no powers regarding establishing the diagnosis, at this moment, 53 patients being evaluated ex officio by the Office of Criminal Executions of the Court regarding the verification of the safety measure. Currently, the unit cares for 466 patients admitted to the base art. 110 of the Criminal Code, from 14 counties. Their number is fluctuating, depending on the provisions of the judicial bodies and the measures ordered“, explained the manager of SPMS Jebel.

“Addition of medical and auxiliary personnel is required”

The hospital has 15 beds in the acute department and 15 beds in the drug addiction department, and the number of admissions is fluctuating. Currently, 20 acute patients and eight patients are hospitalized in the drug addiction department.

“Considering the specifics of the psychiatric unit and the regime of safety measures, the volume and complexity of the activities require the provision of adequate staff for the supervision and care of patients. In the context of the legislative framework of the last years, the staffing scheme was supplemented to the extent that it was allowed, but, at the moment, it is still necessary to supplement the medical and auxiliary staff, in order to carry out the activities in optimal conditions of safety and quality”.
