The US president has stated on several occasions that the United States could resort to force to take over Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, considered essential to US national security.
In this context, the Danish authorities emphasized that the fundamental rules of national defense apply regardless of the identity of the attacking forces. Thus, Danish soldiers would be obliged to open fire even without explicit orders in the event of an invasion of Denmark, including if carried out by American troops, according to a military directive from 1952. Denmark's Ministry of Defense confirmed that the document is still in force.
Against the backdrop of these tensions, speculation has resurfaced regarding the possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO. However, Traian Băsescu is convinced that this will not happen.
“Trump rushed. These are unfortunate statements. I do not believe that the United States will withdraw from NATO, even if (Donald Trump – no) also said it was thundering that NATO never helped the USA. But where were we in Iraq, in Afghanistan, when we went after America? (…) Romanian soldiers died in Afghanistan and Iraq. For America,” Basescu said.
The former president also believes that Europe could end up talking directly with Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, given that the results of the negotiations coordinated by the US are still to be expected:
“Eventually, Europe will have to talk to Putin. We are facing a president (Donald Trump – no) who said, correctly, 'arm yourself and be able to defend yourself', but he can't even say 'I have nuclear warheads, but I'm withdrawing from NATO'. (…) Don't you want to stay in Washington?”, concluded Traian Băsescu.
