A “new era of sobriety” has arrived in Russia — VTsIOM
A survey of the population revealed how the drinking habits of Russians have changed over the past 20 years. A sober lifestyle has become more popular: the share of non-drinkers is almost equal to that of drinkers – 48% versus 52%.
For comparison, in the early 2000s, there were only 27% of abstainers, and 73% of alcohol drinkers. Beer, which was previously preferred by almost every second person, is now drunk by only 18%, wine by 19%, and vodka by only 11%.
Alcohol preferences differ by gender: men more often choose beer (25%) and strong alcohol, women – wine (26%).
The main reasons for drinking alcohol remain the same – Russians drink to relieve stress and tension (38%). Also, many talk about a lack of willpower (27%) and attempts to “fill in” the trouble (20%).
