Not all beets are equally sweet. Some varieties produce a hard core already in August, others crack after rain, and others do not grow at all without sun. But there are proven options that are suitable even for a small area near the fence and will last until spring.
1. Bordeaux 237
- A classic that has been tested for decades. Not a hybrid, which means you can collect the seeds and plant them for years.
- The root vegetables are round, dark burgundy, 8–10 cm in diameter, with thin skin and rich, sweet flesh without rings.
- It grows well in partial shade, does not require frequent watering, and does not crack even with heavy rains.
- Ideal for borscht, salads and freezing.
2. Egyptian flat
- Mid-season variety with high sugar and beta-carotene content.
- The roots are flat-rounded, up to 12 cm in diameter, dark burgundy, dense, but not woody.
- Productivity is up to 6–8 kg per 1 m², even with minimal care.
- It stays well until March without losing its taste and color.
- Suitable for workpieces.
3. Merchant's wife F1
- Super-yielding hybrid for lazy beds.
- Produces even, smooth root crops with a diameter of 9–11 cm, with minimal tops.
- Resistant to flowering and blight, not afraid of cool weather.
- It ripens together, does not require frequent weeding, and grows even on dense soil.
- Great for fresh salads, cooking and stewing.
These three varieties do not require deep digging, daily watering or perfect sun. Simply plant and harvest sweet, juicy beets before frost, and then eat them from the cellar until spring.
